Welcome to the blog on the APSC Syllabus. The Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) is the state agency responsible for conducting civil service examinations in Assam. The APSC examination is conducted in three stages – Preliminary, Mains, and Interview. In this blog, we will discuss the APSC Syllabus in detail.
Preliminary Examination
The APSC Preliminary Examination consists of two papers – General Studies and Optional Subject. Both the papers are of objective type and each paper is for a duration of 2 hours.
General Studies
The General Studies paper is further divided into two parts – Part A and Part B. Part A consists of questions on General Knowledge and Part B consists of questions on Aptitude.
The topics covered in the General Knowledge section are as follows:
- Current events of national and international importance
- History of India and Assam
- Indian and Assamese Culture and Heritage
- Geography of India and Assam
- Indian Polity and Constitution
- The economy of India and Assam
- General Science and Technology
- Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change
- Assam and its neighboring states
The Aptitude section includes questions on logical reasoning, analytical ability, data interpretation, and decision-making.
Optional Subject in APSC Syllabus
The Optional Subject paper consists of questions from a subject chosen by the candidate. The list of optional subjects is as follows:

Mains Examination
The APSC Mains Examination consists of six papers – General English, General Studies, and four papers on the Optional Subject chosen by the candidate. The General English and General Studies papers are compulsory for all candidates. Each paper is for a duration of 3 hours.
General English
The General English paper tests the candidate’s proficiency in English. The topics covered in this paper are as follows
- Essay Writing
- Precis Writing
- Drafting and Translation
- English Grammar and Vocabulary
General Studies
The General Studies paper is further divided into two parts – Part A and Part B. Part A consists of questions on General Knowledge and Part B consists of questions on Aptitude. The topics covered in the General Knowledge section are the same as those in the Preliminary Examination. The Aptitude section includes questions on logical reasoning, analytical ability, data interpretation, and decision-making.
Optional Subjects
The Optional Subject papers consist of questions from the subject chosen by the candidate. The list of optional subjects is the same as that in the Preliminary Examination.

Interview
The Interview is the final stage of the APSC Examination. The Interview is conducted to test the candidate’s personality, leadership qualities, and communication skills.
The APSC Syllabus is designed to test the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of a wide range of topics. The APSC Examination is considered to be one of the toughest competitive examinations in India.
