Assam Public Service Commission conducts APSC Combined Competitive exam to recruit qualified candidates in various administrative positions like the Assam Civil Services (Jr. Grade), the Assam Land and Revenue Service (Jr. Grade), the Assam Police Service (Jr. Grade), Labor Officer, Superintendent of Taxes etc. under the Government of Assam.
It is one of the most highly competitive exams in the state and those who qualify successfully can get a good rank in society. But to get selected one has to go through three phases including Preliminary exams, Main exam and Interview.
The Preliminary exam consists of two papers including General Studies I and General Studies II. The Main exam consists of ten papers.

1. Indian Polity
Indian Polity is one of the most important subjects in all the civil services exams. Most of the questions related to these topics are pertinent to the development of the constitution. Therefore you should have a thorough knowledge of the Constitution of India. Special emphasis should be given on Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles, Fundamental Duties and President and Parliament.
You should also be aware of the news and should relate them to the constitution. Besides, you should also be aware of the government schemes and policies.
You should refer to the books of Laxmikant, Subhash Kashyap and PM Bakshi. Besides you can also go through the NCERT books which will help you to clear the basic concepts regarding the topics.
2. History
The history of India and the Indian National Movement is given emphasis in this portion. Other topics in the History section include Indian culture, Modern Indian history, the freedom struggles, post-independence consolidation, salient features of Indian society, the role of women and women’s organizations, effects of Globalization on Indian society, social empowerment, communalism, Regionalism and Secularism.
To build a foundation in this subject you should read the NCERT books from at least Class VII to XII. Then you should go through the previous year’s question paper to get familiar with the exam pattern.

3. Economics
Economics is also one of the important subjects in the civil service exam. Various topics related to this subject include the Indian economy and issues relating to planning, government budgeting, food processing and related industries in India, land reforms in India, investment model, science and technology, disaster and disaster management with emphasis on Assam, and various security forces and agencies and their mandate.
To get the concept of the subject, you should start with the NCERT books from at least class VIII to XII. Besides you can also refer to the books like Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh and Indian Economy Key Concepts by Shankar Ganesh.
You should also update yourself with the recent economic development and other current affairs related to other economic issues.
4. Ethics
Ethics consists of topics that include Human values, Attitude, Emotional intelligence, contributions of moral thinkers and philosophers from India and the world etc.
The aim of including the subject in the syllabus is to test the attitudes, problem-solving abilities related to various issues of society. It is a kind of subjective paper that tests your productive and pragmatic approach, self-awareness, personal and professional ethics are examined.
One of the advantages is that you can prepare notes for this subject without depending much on current affairs. Once you complete the preparation you should start revising the topics.
5. Art and Culture of Assam
In this paper, you will have to go through the various topics including History, Art, Culture, Literature, Tradition and Heritage of Assam, Geography of Assam, Political and Administrative System of Assam, Economy of Assam etc.
To prepare for this subject, you should go through the previous years question papers. It will help you to understand the question paper. You should read the books of social science of high school level where the art and culture of Assam are elaborately described.
6. Current Affairs
Current affairs are the most important topic in the civil service exam. Since the paper on current affairs does not have a defined syllabus, you should adopt a systematic approach to prepare for this paper.
To prepare for this subject, you should read the newspaper and magazine on a daily basis. You should always try to update yourself with the current news related to politics, economic, science and technology.
You may also make notes related to important topics and revise them after every short interval. While making notes you should include the important detail of every topic.
7. Optional Subjects
You will be allowed to select any of the two optional subjects for the mains exam. While selecting the optional subjects, you should be aware of your interests. You should not consider other factors except your interest while selecting an optional subject.
