Indian Railways, one of the largest rail networks in the world recruits anormous number of personnel in various cadres Indian Railways is divided into zones, which are further sub divided into divisions. These zone and divisions have technical and non-technical departments to which recruitment are done through Competitive exams. Technical departments include civil, technical and mechanical engineering, signalling and telecom, and several others dealing with similar disciplines, while the non-technical departments include general services such as accounts, personnel management, Railway protection Force (RPF) or security and traffic services, among others. Each department has staff at various levels. The highest are the Group A officers, while the lowest in rank are the Group D staff members.
Departments are classified into Gazette (Group A and B) and Non-Gazette (Group C and D) employees. Recruitment to group A service in various departments of Railways are made through Competitive Examination held by the Union Public Service commission and recruitment to Group C and D employees on the Indian Railways is done through 19 Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) which are controlled by the Railway Recruitment Control Board (RRCB).
